What is a "Search Directory"?

A search directory is a categorized list of information about web sites. The primary difference between a search index (aka search engine) and a search directory is the directory has information about the sites (like viewer information, owner, etc) and search engines contain information indexing all individual pages. Yahoo! has the biggest search directory (http://dir.yahoo.com).

How do Search Directories index information?

Unlike search engines, search directories do not use bots. Instead they use website owner provided information like title tags, meta descriptions, and the larger directories like Yahoo! they have actual people who review every site to make sure that each web site is in the proper category.
