Social Media - A "Soapbox" Without Restraint? | Guest Blog post by Joel Carlson

With more and more social networking tools becoming available, it can be quite easy to spread a message or thought to a wide variety of people in a rather short amount of time. Go to Twitter and tell people a thought in 140 characters or less. Go to Facebook and tell and share a little more. Download a video on YouTube and spend time sharing your thoughts, ideas and passions with whoever will watch and listen to you. While all of these tools are wonderful to use, there is no restraint or stopping the sending of what you've done after you hit Update, Share or Upload. So what does this require of you?

Having access to all of the various forms of social networking allows people to share their thoughts electronically in a rather simple and easy way. What it still requires of the individual using them, is to decide, "Do I really want to say this?" "Is this going to hurt or harm someone that I don't intend it to?" "How will people take this?" before sending it off. An individual needs to edit and sensor themselves because once they send what they've done out into cyberworld, they will be judged and thought of based on that content. That's not to say things can't be deleted and removed if that's decided, but how much better to think before you send. A persons ideas, thought and opinions are all valuable commodities that can stimulate design, development and growth. Why not make sure of their quality by stopping and thinking before you send them out?  How about a mantra for all Social Media users of "Think before you send."  Let me know what you think about this.
