I've had two separate western digital drives fail, losing thousands of images, my entire mp3 collection, and a lot of irreplaceable stuff. I learned two valuable lessons - backup - and don't buy WD drives.
Seagates have always treated me well. I currently use two seagate 500GB drives with RAID mirroring.
This is my preferred external setup: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEFW912AL2/

For a total of under $300 for 500GB mirrored storage. This would be suitable for either a timemachine backup drive, or just attached storage for work. With the mirrored RAID you always have two copies of everything, just in case.
If you're using it simply as external storage, vs. time machine, you might want to upgrade the whole kit to a SATA system, which brings the cost up by $50-100, but will get you about %30 faster throughput over firewire 800, especially if you're working with a lot of large files.
Awesome post, I think i have followed your guidelines on mine but I'm still a noob. Thanks for the tips!
