Linden Labs is into gaming, they are innovative, random, and interesting all at once. The intro to their site says, Linden Lab was founded in 1999 by Philip Rosedale to create a revolutionary new form of shared experience known as Second Life®.
I bet you recognize Second Life, but if you don't I'll give you a quick overview. It's a gaming platform where you build this avatar that looks like a person, maybe even you, and lives in a virtual world. In that virtual world you can buy things, sell and interact with other real people. You purchase fake money with real money and can build houses, buildings, etc.
I'm not sure how I feel about second life, frankly building the avatar and trying to navigate through that virtual world gave me a little bit of a head ache. I only tried it for about a week before giving up, but I know Second Life is wildly popular with some people. It's a bit of a gamers paradise, minus the games. It even goes as far as to allow avatars doing X rated content, or so I hear. That last bit might be rumor.
Let's follow this up with the number of companies that hopped on second life to offer anything from virtual Coke Coal to advertising. How do you feel about this, it it a hot topic or just a dying dream game that started as a good idea?
