Social media and Twitter seem like scary places to some none tech people. Other people just find all the chatter overwhelming. Most businesses have been vying for Twitter reader-estate since Twitter's day one. There have been lots of success and utter failures on Twitter. The difference in a flop or a Twitter win has always been in the way people listen and respond (or lack of that).
LOTS of social media enthusiasts like to tell clients, friends and onlookers to just listen and react on Twitter, but don't really explain what that means. Explaining Twitter to someone is like explaining noise to a deaf person or color to a blind person. How do you teach a blind person to feel color or a Twitter noobie to be human?
What do people mean when they say LISTEN on twitter?
Listening on Twitter means you follow interesting people and actually read what they have to say. Help them. Respond to questions or concerns. Wish people happy birthday or sympathies when their dog dies. Send them flowers when they are sick. Send them job tips or new friends that you think they would like. Join in their conversations with other people and watch your network grow.
If you want to be a really proactive listener then use Twitter search. Look up terms related to your business like your brand name, your name, your twitter handle, mis-spellings of your twitter handle, and words you think people would say if they where looking for people like you. Words like, "I need a Web Designer in Minneapolis" or "I'm looking to buy a new (specific bread maybe) horse" or "Can anyone recommend ___." Try to always use the type of product or service, the city or state you live in (but use the common abbreviation), and at least one term like "I need" or "I want to buy" or "help me find."
Tips on talking via Twitter
When you follow someone new, instead of auto tweeting them, you could say hello and mention how you found them or who recommended you. The person who recommended them will also appreciate this kind gesture. I learned that friendly tid-bit via @michaelanschel. You should always track your name and respond to prospects and clients. Doing this will also help you reign in negative PR.
It's always great to talk about other people more then yourself, but not in a negative way. Talk about the great things other people are doing, especially non-profits and friends with cool ideas. Talk about other peoples awesome books or blog posts, but that doesn't mean just always repeating them by retweeting. Have your own ideas and then comment on why you are recommending that post. Comment on that persons blog, trust me from one blogger to another, I love comments and never get enough of them (sometimes makes me wonder if you, my readers, really exist). If someone has a great idea, tell them so (people like this kind of feedback). When someone does something for you that you like, remember that type of gesture, and then try to do it for others (and thank that person). Tweet about events, tips on how they could improve or what they are doing great, and watch others thoughts. Try to use hashtags whenever possible and then use Twitter search to track the hashtag and respond to fellow attendees. Doing this will make you have more friends IRL (in real life) and maybe even get you a few Twitter followers.
Well there is a nice start on tips to being human. Hope that helps out any lost corporations, brands, confused humans, or Twitter sex-bots. What do you think? Are you human on Twitter? Do I seem human on Twitter to you? Do you like my blog or hate my Tweets? I look forward to your comments.
