Just read Invent a holiday by Seth Godin. He literally wants us (marketers, web designers, public relations people) to invent more holidays and use them to elicit our products. Thing is we have worthy holidays now that are being mis-used, skipped over or raped by the cable company/marketers/pr.
Don't Invent ANYMORE Holidays, Just Stop Skipping the Ones We Have.
We start off the fall holidays season with haunted houses and Christmas movies. We skip a lot of Thanksgiving and literally have the Christmas movies start in October. Scary movies don't come until February. Thanksgiving feasts are a family only festival where grocery stores, restaurants and even Chinese delivery stop catering on the day (so that all single people whose familys' are too far away can be constantly reminded that the only place to go is the movie theater and McDonoalds). I'm pretty sure the grocery store could stay open for with two people and make a killing off the people who forget to purchase this or that.
Christmas lights nearly skip over Thanksgiving and barely all go away by the time the snow melts. New years is a one day celebration. Where is all the pink and red for Valentine's Day? Why are the streets not filled with hearts, flowers and candy? The list of not fully utilizing and/or skipping over one holiday for another goes on and on.
I love holidays. All I'm saying is don't start inventing one for your brand. Just encourage people to better celebrate the ones we have. The hype and the euphoria is much better when you just enjoy them one at a time for their individual, great, unique qualities. Sides your printer toner is not going to be a good enough reason to celebrate the season.
