At the Unsummit Pete B. talked a lot about the future and how companies COULD be catering to our every needs by tapping into local tech knowledge bases. Just think about how much of your information is on the web.
Google and Amazon know your shopping preferences. Google and WebMD know your medical background. Google (YouTube) and Hulu know what you like to watch. Gowalla, Please Rob Me, and FourSquare know when you are home and when you go to the bar (Google can find this via Twitter or Please Rob Me). Shelfari, Google Reader, iTunes and Amazon know what you like to read and listen to for music. Google Picasa, Facebook and Flickr know what you look like (plus can use facial recognition to find other pictures of you). Now there is Google Voice (for your phone), Google Maps (for where you are going), Gmail (for your emails and other communications via Buzz), and Google Wave for Collaboration. I can go on and on.
Do you see a Google trend here? And even if you delete that information it is still stored somewhere, forever.
Applied properly someone could use this information in a positive way or a negative way. At the very least you could have millions of stalkers and never know it, or maybe you would. These stalkers could someday be called marketers who are just trying to help you find more products similar to your tastes. After seeing how well this is going via Facebook ads, I'm debating if this is a good thing. I know it could be used as a convenience, but I just keep seeing how people in sales like to take things that step too far. Not everyone is a spammer mind you, but there will always be one of those annoying arses out there.
