Television, Radio and Newspapers
I don't read the newspaper unless I am very bored, on a bus, or at a coffee shop waiting for someone. I only watch television channels that are commercial free, if I venture outside of that rule then I fast forward through the commercials and if both of those fail .. I walk away until the commercials are over. The channels I do watch with commercials are trying to sell me sports equipment, and those just make me jealous of the skinny people on those machines and don't make me watch to buy their machine. I simply don't listen to the radio, I really don't. My radio time is only in a friend's car or maybe the radio at a store or coffee shop.
I have specific tastes, know where to get what I want and only settle for that.
What I read, because I read A LOT.
If I want to read, I look for the topic I want to read. I don't try to sift through the newspaper, mostly because I don't like reading only negative topics and frankly newspapers are big Debby downers. I read a lot, just not YOUR paper. I love reading blogs and books. I probably read 3 books at a time per month. I read on the treadmill, before bed or during downtime in waiting areas. I carry a book with me almost all the time, but I don't like negative books. The things you let into your life effect your well being and definitely effect MY happiness. I literally ASK book store attendants if a book ends sadly or if it has a negative undertone throughout it, I do. I ask this because if I read a book I know that I am starting a relationship with that book and I will spend a month (if not longer) immersed in this book. I don't want to be sad or angry for a whole month, but that's just because I know that books, like people, effect me emotionally. Maybe you can separate your emotions from your imagination, personal relationship and are not an empathetic person.. I'm incapable of doing this.
If you want to be a happier person I recommend you too cut out anything that effects you negatively.
Life is too short to ___________. Fill the blank with anything you don't like or anything that hurts you. Think about when you are on an emotional high or have just had a lot of caffeine, you feel happy and invincible. Now think of a time when you where happy and feeling invincible and Debby McDowner came along complained, gave you bad news, said something mean to you and crushed your happy day. OUCH! Their are two types of people in this world. The type that have a lot of positive energy and even after leaving their presence they leave you feeling happy and empowered. The second type of person is the type that drains you and steals your energy because they are not in a happy place and thus not capable of giving back. You can only help those who want to help themselves.
Shopping is an exercise, I'm sorry if you have not yet become aquanted with my workout program.
Back on track with my message to advertisers and marketers. If you are trying to reach the world and me you need to become creative and think outside the box more often. You need to expand your reach. You say it's not personal it's just business, well it's personal to ME. Join me in the online and offline conversations. Join me where I am. Not feeling inspired? I'll give you some creative examples.
- Know a blogger talking about topics relating to your product or service? Have them mention you more. Have them link to your product. Remember FCC requires they disclose if you endorse them.
- Direct mail letters and post cards are boring, under targeted and end up in my trash. Why not send me something I want. Send me a cute card or a sample of your produce. Let the good product speak for itself.
- A peice of paper in my mailbox does not grab my attention, but a box sure does. I'm sure your company has schwag. Feel free to send me a shirt, bottle of wine, flowers or coffee cup instead of wasting your money on $30,000 television spots. Come to think of it if you know I like flowers and send me some, you have a customer for life. If shopping is like being in a relationship you just became my favorite brand boyfriend.
- Don't try to bring boring traditional advertising online when you COULD be playing interactive. If you want to advertise on Hulu don't interrupt my show. I hate your for that and after watching the same commercial 5 times in one sitting, yes I remember you.
You could have a message off to the side of the video, I am less bothered by that. Hulu is free movies and television shows online, think outside the box be interactive. If I love the show, then I probably love the characters in the show, I may even like the way they dress or look. Hello interactive product placement. I wish I could click on the screen and just purchase the interior decorating, the actresses clothing styles, hire her hair dresser and the list goes on. What if they are cooking something that sounds good? I could click on the screen and purchase the food from Coborns and the recipe from Betty Crocker.
